<trans-abstract xml:lang="en"><p>This article examines the emergency core cooling system (ECCS) of Unit 2 of the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant (ANPP) in the context of enhancing its safety and reliability. The relevance of this work stems from the need to justify the extension of the unit's service life, as well as the expansion of the range of design-basis accidents with an increase in the maximum design-basis accident limit to a coolant leak with an equivalent diameter of 200 mm. An analysis of the initial system concept and implemented modifications aimed at improving the efficiency of emergency cooling is provided. To assess the operability of the ECCS under various emergency scenarios, thermal-hydraulic calculations were performed using the RELAP5/MOD3.2 software package. Scenarios for primary coolant leaks with an equivalent diameter of 120 to 190 mm under various combinations of equipment failures, including the failure of high-pressure emergency make-up channels, are considered. As a result, it is established that, under certain system configurations, a «make-up-into-the-leak» effect occurs, whereby the supplied coolant does not effectively fill the primary circuit. It is shown that, for leaks with diameters of 130–180 mm, safety criteria may be violated due to overheating of the fuel rod cladding, whereas, for larger leak diameters, cooling conditions can be improved by more rapid pressure reduction and the activation of low-pressure systems. Based on the obtained results, directions for further modernization of the ECCS are proposed, including optimization of the piping connection scheme and increased system efficiency, which will increase the design-basis accident limits and enhance nuclear safety.</p></trans-abstract><kwd-group xml:lang="ru"><kwd>аварийное охлаждение</kwd><kwd>атомная энергетика</kwd><kwd>безопасность</kwd><kwd>ААЭС</kwd><kwd>модернизация</kwd></kwd-group><kwd-group xml:lang="en"><kwd>emergency cooling</kwd><kwd>nuclear energy</kwd><kwd>safety</kwd><kwd>ANPP</kwd><kwd>modernization</kwd></kwd-group></article-meta></front><back><ref-list><title>References</title><ref id="cit1"><label>1</label><citation-alternatives><mixed-citation xml:lang="ru">International Atomic Energy Agency.
